Late Daniel Edwin Ernest Hardick was her husband and her children. F1 Neil Godfrey Hardick and F2 Lee-Anne Susanne Hardick and husband Ockert VAN SCHALKWYK was mentioned. She was a pensioner, Monte Rose home for aged, 5 Faure Street, Gardens.

I managed to contact Rutarnia Hardick and asked her to write something about her grandparents and this is what she wrote:

“I remember as a little girl (NANNA – Grandma Shirley) as we called her was a real good cook. And when I mean good….Fantastic! As kids we loved her Sweet Potato, (Matats – as Dean used to call it) School Holidays we used to go visit and bake cookies, etc. It was my job to cut the pastry bands we put across the jam tartlets and my brother had to scoop in the apricot jams. (UPPA – Granddad Eddie) – was a very comical man. He always had a little joke to tell. Every morning Uppa would go and feed the birds in the garden. I am not sure if you knew but he use to collect stamps and had a little Budgie called “Pretty Boy”. But because Uppa never aged he taught the bird to say: ”tannie met die rooi rokkie” and obviously in our time its not something funny….but in those days it was fround upon. So apparently the bird said this in front of the Pastor one evening with a house visit….as pastors use to do in those days. Nanna was livid and obviously not impressed. I remember my Dad mentioning that there is a Neil…Lee-Ann…Shirley Street in Cape Town. I am not sure if this is true, but I remember Uppa mentioning this once. I also remember that there was a “sweets drawer” in their house. SO after dinner we kids were allowed to help ourselves to some sweets in the drawer. And for some or other reason, the sweets in there were never sweets we had in our house or could find in the shops. lol I also remember us playing “toffee” poker with Uppa after dinner…that was a lot of fun as Dean never had many sweets left as he ate his winnings. Wow, what a trip down memory lane. I am sure if I have a bit more time a couple more things will come to mind. Tarni “

Between Father Wilhelm Godtfriedt Hardick and son Daniel Edwin Ernest Hardick, they planned together a project to build a block of flats on the corner of Grove Avenue and Hugo Street. This letter on the left was found in the archives. Going through the file, it was granted and father (age 68) and son (age 35) at that time, was given the permission to erect as their application, a block of flats at that time just after 1958. I was told by the family, that 10 years later, Wilhelm Godtfriedt passed away and they sold the piece of ground with the planned rights to build. The new owner erected the block of flats.

Jacob or Japie as his family called him, was born May 1, 1926 and baptized on July 6, 1926 in the Dutch Reformed Church, the congregation of Kaapland. It also quite interesting, Jacob Nicolaas Botma en Johannes Petrus Botma signed as witnesses. Question to the family? Was Jacob Nicolaas Botma the father of Japie’s mother, Bregchie Botma?

Answer from Lee-Anne Susanne Van Schalkwyk (Born Hardick) Hallo Mike Pleased to hear you have made such good progress with the book. It must be quite a challenge.

One of my Ouma Hardick's (Bregchie Botma) brothers (she was one of quite a big family) was Uncle Kotie Botma. We had quite a lot of contact with them when they lived here in Johannesburg. His wife Aunty Lulu actually made my wedding dress......quite some time ago. He could be one of the two Botmas mentioned. He and his wife both passed away. Then there was also a Nicky Botma. He was a cousin of my Dad. The other one could be his father...... Sorry I can't be of more assistance. Regards Lee-Anne

Jacob was baptized by Dutch Reformed Minister A.J. Van Der Merwe File 1647/1968 at Iustitia, Parade Street. Cape Town, death notice of Wilhelm Godfriedt Hardick, mentioned Jacob Nicolaas Hardick as his son.
