Brief overview:
They no longer hold out door braais, because since the shooting on them during a braai two years ago, the Dercksen couple and their children are "paranoid" about a possible attack.
Bennie Dercksen, 50, who survived a gunshot wound, was on Thursday at the Pretoria High Court when two of his attackers were sentenced.
These attackers were part of a gang.
His brother Danie, 44, whose home the family had fried the night of April 26, 2014, was shot dead.
Bennie told his own gunshot wound outside the court on Thursday: "The bullet is left in front of my chest and left 5 mm from my spine."
He said he had to pay R165 000 for medical treatment, but recovered well from the wound.
The two brothers lived near each other on farms in the Geluk holding area near Brits.
None of us have been given psychological treatment because there is no money for that.
Bennie Derksen Their mother and several other relatives were at Danie's braai when they were robbed by robbers.
Bennie says his wife, Annetjie (40), is tied with blue thread. "She saw everything happening."
“Danie was shot 3m from her and I was 2m from her when I was shot.
"When Annetjie (in the case) testified, it opened up the old wounds. She told me she had found the smell of powder and blood in her nose again. She is * k. I'm sorry to put it that way, but that's the truth, ”Bennie said about his wife's emotional state.
They gave her a sedative before she testified.
"None of us have received psychological treatment, because there is no money for such a thing."
He still gets flashbacks about the attack and sleeps very badly, says Bennie.
“To braai was a weekend establishment with us. But we haven't fried yet. It just brings bad memories and we are paranoid.
"I've also become moody and aggressive," he says.
Danie's children get very heavy without him.
The lives of the two families were totally overthrown. After the attack, their family moved to the village immediately. They didn't want to live on the hooves they rented. Danie was also a tenant on the holding where he lived.
Bennie said in court one of the attackers, Knowledge Paulus Mandlazi, showed him the middle finger sign from the dock.
