Notes

From HISTORY OF THE ANCESTORS, FAMILIES, AND DESCENDANTS OF PARIS PATRICK COMISFORD, by Bill Comisford:

David Daniel Bonnett (aka Louis Bonnett) was born in Fhionque, France about 1658, the son of Jean Pierre Bonnett, who was born about 1630 in Southern France and died sometime after 1699. David married Christine Cousine (aka Christi Causine) about 1692 in Friedrichstal, Germany. Christine was born about 1662. David lived in Thronque, France during the period 1681-1687. In 1687, he and his family fled religious persecution, settling in Morlheim, Germany. There was a story that "Daniel, wife and two children tried to reach the coast to escape France for religious freedom. They hid the children, covered with vegetables in baskets on a donkey. A trooper thrust a sword in the basket and a child suffered flesh wounds, but survived. The family escaped to Holland, then to Switzerland from whence Jeanne [daughter] came to America." David passed away on September 4, 1736, while Christine passed away February 21, 1732.

The Church of St. Evangile records indicate that he may have been married twice. If that is the case, Christine would have been his second wife.

Daniel Bonnett, - born abt 1665, Thorigne, Poitou France md. Jane/Jeanne Couturier bef 1693, France. She was born abt 1670, Meschers, Santongue, France. Have no date of death or place for either one.

When Daniel and Jeanne were leaving France, in their attempt to reach the French coast, they concealed two small children in the panniers of a donkey, covered with fresh vegetables. Jeanne told the children to be perfectly silent, no matter what happens. They had hardly started their journey when they were overtaken by a Gendarmes, who demanded to know what the panniers contained. Jeanne told him fresh vegetables for the market. The soldier, as if doubting her words, rode up alongside the donkey and thrust his sword into the nearest pannier, exclaiming, as he rode away "Bon Voyage Mes Amis" The parents concealed their agony, till the soldier was out of sight, then quickly opened the pannier and one of the children had been pierced though the calf of his leg, but never cried out. After that, their journey went on, with out any other incident.

They left France bef 1690, when they moved to Bristol, England and became members of the French Church bet. 1690-1700 there. Three of their children were born and baptized there.

During the winter of 1700 they sailed to America, he bought with him a certification, as to the good repute the Church members in England thought of him.

From Bolton's History of Westchester County, 1848- "Civitas Bristol. These are to certify that the bearer here of Daniel Bonnett, weaver (as we are very well assumed by persons of credit and repute the French Refugees here) is a French Protestant of good repute and hath lived here 10 years, but in hope of better maintaining himself and family is intending to settle himself with his wife and 4 children in some of his Majesties Plantation in America. Having some trouble in his children, I do have names, but not sure if there were more or not.

I know that when they left France, they had 2 children born in France, and it states 3 of their children were born in England (those I have the names of). That would make 5 children, but they are to had come with 4 children. What happen to the 5th one, did it pass away in England or older and came by themselves or stay in England. the 1710 census has names that I have not seen before and the ages seem to be all wrong. I will sent you what I have.

Daniel and his wife were attempting to reach the French coast with two s mall children concealed in the paniers of a donkey, covered with fresh v egetables. The mother having enjoined upon the children to keep perfect s ilence, no matter what might occur, they had scarcely commenced their j ourney when they were overtaken by a gend'arme, who demanded to know wh at the paniers contained. The mother replied, 'fresh vegetables for the m arket.' As if doubting her words, the rough soldier rode up to the side o f the donkey, and thrust his sword into the nearest panier, exclaiming a s he rode away, 'Bon voyage mesamies!' The agony of the parents may be c onceived, until the soldier was well out of sight, when the panier was i mmediately opened, and the child was found to have been pierced through t he calf of his leg. Fortunately nothing more occurred to interrupt thei r journey to the coast.

They lived in Bristol, England and were members of the French Church th ere from 1690 to 1700
