Daniel 'DG' at the age of 22, enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private on 11 April, 1861 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Daniel, on 31 December, 1861 was assigned to serve with Company 'H' of the 38th North Caroline Infantry Regiment CSA. He would be mustered out on 21 July, 1862 for unknown reasons.
