About Daniel Welch
Daniel Welch was born circa 1765 in Darlington County, SC the son of William Welch and Alice Settle formerly of Fauquier County Virginia. Around 1790 Daniel's family moved to Greenville County South Carolina. The 1800 Greenville Census indicates that Daniel was married and had a family. Daniel's first wife is unkonown but may have been Elizabeth Roe. Census records indicate that he married a second wife about 1805. Her name was Priscilla ?.
Daniel's Greenville County SC property is not clearly recorded except for a deed stating tht George Welch's 337 acre tract along with a small SC State Grant of 48 acres and some of William Welch's property became the lawful property of Daniel Welch. This occurred during the period between 1801-1820. (GCD-L255). Daniel also had two additional SC state grants giving him about 800 acres of property on Raburn's Creek.
Daniel was an active member of Standing Springs Baptist Church. His son, Joseph N. Welch, was a pastor at Tyger Baptist Church and on Feb 18, 1832 was sent to form a new church at New Providence. By 1838, Daniel sold the Raburn's Creek property having bought land on Mush Creek of the South Tygar River in upper Greenville County i 1837. This property was adjacent to land of Maj. Zadock Westmoreland who later married Daniel's daughter Alsey.
When Daniel died in 1839, he was about 74 years old. His will named wife Priscilla to have his property as a life estate. Children from his will were sons, Joseph N. and Jesse, daughters Alsey, Priscilla, Anna, Jane and Keziah. He also named Negroes Daniel, Prince, Silas and Liaz (WB-B, P166). Daniel Welch's daughter, Alsey, married Major Zadock F. Westmoreland, Anna married Thomas Stepp, Jane marriedHenry Pearson Jr. and Keziah married James Durham. Joseph N. married Mary ? and Jesse married first, in Greenville, SC Nancy Moore and second, in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, Martha F. Houston.
