Darien Kartchner

Darien Kartchner was born November 19, 1875, in Panguitch, Utah, to William Decatur Kartchner and Elizabeth Gale. By the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for Snowflake, Arizona, he was listed there as follows: Darien's father, William D., 59, a blacksmith, Margaret J., his first wife, 54, and sons Nowlin D., 17, Orrin, 15; Darien's mother, Elizabeth, 34, (William's plural wife from Australia, "keeping house"), and their children, Aaron, 16, Henry Culver, 11, Minnie, 9, Byrtle, 7, Darien, 5, and Elsie, 2 years old. Three more children were born to William and Elizabeth, Etta in 1881, Zina in 1883, and Melva in 1886.

Darien married Margaret Ann McCleve October 8, 1903, and may have also married her sister, Susan, the same day. By 1910 Darien, 37, was still married to Margaret Ann McCleve, 43, and they had three children, Zenna, 5, Minnie, 4, and Elizabeth, 2. They also had two sons, Darien Ralph, who was born March 20, 1910, and died two days later on March 22, and Calvert McCleve Kartchner in 1924 who was stillborn with the umbilical cord wrapped around his little neck. It also appears that they had two more daughters, Eva and Sadie, according to Darien's obituary shown below.

Darien and Margaret's daughter, Zenna, married James William Ethington on December 2, 1926, in Snowflake, Arizona, and they had 3 children, Kenneth William, Lester Darien, and Elden Floyd.

There is evidence that Darien also married Anna Groh, born April 4, 1885, in New York. She was the daughter of Karl Charles Groh and his wife Barbara Pauli Groh. Anna stated that when she learned Darien was still married to some of these other women she filed for divorce. Anna later also married Wilhelm Frederick Engel, Albert E. Gardner and John Cook Peffers. Anna had at least three children, Walter, John, and Otto with John Cook Peffers. Anna died while living at 136 E. 1st Avenue, Mesa, Arizona.

Darien also married Henrietta Hall Frost on March 14, 1933, but I doubt they had any children, and Mary Lou Self Edgar, (marriage date unknown) who he was buried next to in the Clovis Cemetery. Mary Lou had previously been married to Clarence E. Edgar in 1902 and they had four children, Wilma Irene, in 1904, Donald J. in 1906, Hilda B., in 1910, and James Lewis, in 1919. It doesn't appear that Mary Lou and Darien had any children together.

The Fresno Bee, April 13, 1964, page 12A, Darien Kartchner: Funeral services for Darien Kartchner, 88, of 2552 East Tyler Avenue, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Yost & Webb Funeral Chapel. He died yesterday in a local hospital. A native of Panguitch, Utah, Kartchner was a farmer in Arizona before moving to Fresno in 1937. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kartchner is survived by his widow, Mary Lou; and five daughters, Mrs. Zenna Ethington of Salt Lake City, Utah, Mrs. Minnie Rhoton of Chandler, Arizona, Mrs. Elizabeth Bower of San Francisco, Mrs. Elva Cluff of Mesa, Arizona, and Mrs. Sadie Bower of Fresno; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Stratton and Mrs. Zina Perkins of Mesa; 20 grandchildren, and 45 great grandchildren. Burial will be in Clovis District Cemetery.
