About Dave H. Ofner
Dave was the eldest of five children of Albert and Mary Ofner, who immigrated from Pilsen, Bohemia, to avoid Albert's induction into the German army. Once the children began school, Albert and Mary insisted that only English was spoken in their home. The children helped in their parents' bakery "across from the Insane Asylum" on Arsenal in South St. Louis.
All 5 Ofner children were confirmed at B'nai El, which was then in then on Delmar in the CWE, and was the first reform congregation west of the Mississippi. Dave remained active in temple leadership as an adult.
He and wife Ida Hyman doted on their only child Bernice. He worked with General Foods. In 1935, they travelled to Egypt and lived at 5940 McPherson Blvd. in St. Louis. They moved to California in 1939, after Bernice divorced Joe Stiffelman.
