About David Fox

David-1 Fox, emigrant. First land patent was in 1650 for land on Morattico Creek in Lancaster County. That makes him a very early settler in the Northern Neck.

His 1st wife was Mary (-----), mother of three of his children, viz:

  • (1) David-2 (m. Hannah Ball)
  • (2) Hannah-2 (m. John-2 Mottrom, son of pioneer John-1 Mottrom of Northumberland & Westmoreland Counties)
  • (3) Rebecca-2 (m. Robert Tomlin)

The 2nd wife of David-1 Fox was Ann MOTRROM, daughter of John-1 Mottrom, as above.

  • (4) William Fox
  • (5) Elizabeth Fox

"According to his will, Captain Fox had issue: 2 David; 3 Hannah, who married Major John Mottrom, son of Colonel John Mottrom, and had Spencer Mottrom, mentioned as son and heir in 1691 (Northumberland County records).

David and Hannah Fox were probably by wife Mary; 4 William; 5 Elizabeth, which two last were probably by wife Ann. [leaves out Rebecca FOX Tomlin, who could not have been by Anne MOTTROM because she was married by 1669

Notes:

An Act of the House of Burgesses in May 1732 regarding land in Essex County (British Colonial Office 5/1389 , ff. 70-71) proves that Captain Joseph Ball married Mary Mottrom, the only child of Spencer Mottrom, Gent. (1670-1700 ) of Northumberland County, and he was the only son and heir of John Mottrom and his wife nee Hannah Fox whose father David Fox of Lancaster County made her a deed poll on 11 November 1662 for 800 acres on Piscataway Creek which fell into Essex County. This land descended to the afore mentioned Mary Mottrom and this Act states she married the afore mentioned Captain Joseph Ball and William Lowry, Gent. of Essex County and had five children by each spouse all of whom were living in 1732.
