About David Gage
The Schiffman family was originally Schiffman. The Schiffman family is said to have lived about eight miles southeast of Hamburg, Germany on the Elbe River. Mr. and Mrs. Schiffman and their two small sons, Joseph and Daniel, began a trip to Wales where they intended to obtain passage to New Jersey in America. During the trip to Wales or soon after their arrival, Mr. Schiffman died.
In a short time, the widow married a man named Nicholas Gage. Mr. Gage had a son named David. The family was to remain in Wales for some years. By the late 1720s the boys were of age to continue the planned trip to America by themselves. They have said to have set sail, landing on the New Jersey shores sometime in the early 1730s. It appears that sometime during the voyage, the name Schiffman was changed to Shipman.
Joseph Shipman is said to have settled in the New Jersey area. David Gage married Abigail Burleson soon after their arrival. They moved with her parents to Lunenburg County, Virginia. Daniel Shipman is said to have gone to Pennsylvania Dutch country. After several years, he was not happy there and so moved to Lunenburg County also. Upon his arrival, he married Abigail's sister, Elizabeth Burleson.
