In 1653 Lion Gardiner placed the island in the care of farmers and removed with his family to East Hampton.
Became the Fourth Proprietor of Gardiner's Island upon the death of his father in his 48th year. David was a good farmer, having 200 head of cattle and 40 horses on the island. With his acres in Easthampton and Montauk and Three Mile Harbor he was able to afford small luxuries. He has a good taste in silverware, and bought from Elias Pelletreau a silversmith in Southampton an impressive collection of various items.
