About David A Glattly

Commander

Ill. David A. Glattly, 33°, was installed as Sovereign Grand Commander in August 2017. Although both his father and grandfather were members of the craft, Bro. Glattly entered the Masonic world through DeMolay. He joined the Clifton DeMolay Chapter in 1970 and served as Master Councilor. Four years later, he became a Mason in Clifton Lodge No. 203. In 1995, he was chosen as Master of the lodge.

Grand Commander Glattly joined Scottish Rite in the 1980s and in 2000 he received the 33° in Pittsburgh. He explains that “In that year, as a millennium project, each Valley nominated candidates doing Masonic work in many fields. I was chosen for my concentration on DeMolay.” Commander Glattly still remains active with that organization.

He served as Grand Marshal of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey in 1998. He was Executive Officer of DeMolay from 1999-2004, and has earned six Grand Master of DeMolay Eagle Awards—the most recent being a lifetime achievement award. Grand Commander Glattly has received several other Masonic honors, including the Daniel Coxe Medal from New Jersey and the Josiah Drummond Award from Maine.

Headquartered in Lexington, Massachusetts, the Supreme Council is the governing body for Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction.

The role of chief executive officer for the Scottish Rite, NMJ is performed by the Sovereign Grand Commander.

The Supreme Council is composed of 49 trustees. They are known as Active Members.

Each of the 15 states within the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction has an Active Member designated as a Deputy. The Deputy serves as the executive officer for Scottish Rite Freemasonry within his state. He is supported by the remaining Active Members of the state.

The Northern Masonic Jurisdiction oversees 15 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, and Vermont.

The Northern Masonic Jurisdiction refers to state organizations as Councils of Deliberation. Local bodies are organized into what are known as Valleys. Degrees from the 4°-32° are conferred in the Valleys.

There is at least one Active Member in addition to the Deputy in each state. Some states have as many as five Active Members.

The Supreme Council meets on an annual basis, at which time the business of the fraternity is done and the 33° is conferred on those who have been elected to receive this honor.
