David Stone, of Great Bromley in Essex

Born about 1540 in Great Bromley, Essex co., England, he lived most of his life under the reign of Queen Elizabeth. According to the will of his father he received 15 pounds and certain livestock and household goods. He married first, Elizabeth Hewitt with whom he had seven children. He married secondly Ursula, who was our ancestor.

STONE was a locational name 'the dweller by the stone or rock' some remarkable sign or landmark, of English origin. Local names usually denoted where a man held his land, and indicated where he actually lived. Early records of the name mention STANE (without surname) who was listed as a tenant in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name appears as STANAS (without surname) in the year 1145, County Oxford. Warin de la Stane of the County of Devon in 1273. Johannes del Stone was mentioned in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. John Francis Stone was baptised at St. James's Church, Clerkenwell, London in 1609. The names introduced into Britain by the Normans during and in the wake of the Invasion of 1066, are nearly all territorial in origin. The followers of William the Conqueror were a pretty mixed lot, and while some of them brought the names of their castles and villages in Normandy with them, many were adventurers of different nationalities attached to William's standard by the hope of plunder, and possessing no family or territorial names of their own. Those of them who acquired lands in England were called by their manors, while others took the name of the offices they held or the military titles given to them, and sometimes, a younger son of a Norman landowner, on receiving a grant of land in his new home dropped his paternal name and adopted that of his newly acquired property. An eminent member of the name was Nicholas Stone (1586-1647) the English mason and architect. He was master mason to James VI. and Charles I. He carried out the designs of Inigo Jones and completed the tombs of Sir Thomas Bodley in Oxford and John Donne in St. Paul's Cathedral. Jerome Stone, 1727-1756, schoolmaster in Dunkeld, 'was the real discoverer to modern knowledge of the ancient Ossianic ballads'. The associated arms are recorded in Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884. Registered at County Lancashire. The lion depicted in the arms is the noblest of all wild beasts which is made to be the emblem of strength and valour, and is on that account the most frequently borne in Coat-Armour.

DAVID STONE (son of Simon), born in Great Bromley, co. Essex, about 1540, received £15 and certain farm stock and household goods, according to the will of his father in 1557 … He resided in Great Bromley where he was living as late as 1507; but as the burial registers of this parish are lost, and he left neither will nor administration, the time of his decease has not been learned. Except for the mentions of him in his father's will and in the parish registers of Great Bromley, but one other record of David stone has been brought to light, viz: a conveyance by him in 1591 of property in Great Bromley …

His second marriage was to Ursula, they married August 23, 1584 in Great Bromley. Children with Elizabeth were: Margery, David, Elizabeth, Frances, Matthew and Agnes Children with Ursula were: Gregory, John, Simon, Samuel, Ursula, Mary, John and Susan. David and Ursula's two sonsGregory and Simon sailed on the ship The Increase from Ipswich with their wives and families ranging from one month old to 16 years, landing in Massachusetts in April three months later.

• ****************************** on April 29 1904 a stained-glass window, "in memory of Gregory and Simon Stone, was unveiled and dedicated in the church, funds for its execution and installation having been raised among their descendants in America, through the Stone Family Association. The memorial is located in the window of the north aisle nearest the chancel. The three principal panels contain figures representing St. Gregory the Great, St. Mary the Virgin with infant Christ, and St. Simon the Apostle; the smaller main panels under each illustrate a notable incident in the life of each, viz: St. Gregory accosting the captive English children in the Market Place in Rome, the Annunciation of the Virgin, and the call of St. Simon by Christ. In small panels at the top, a seventeeth century vessel occupies the center, suggesting the emigration to America; on one side is the seal of Massachusetts, and on the other that of Essex County, England. Over all in a topmost panel is a dove, representing the Holy Spirit. The inscription on the window reads: 'Saecula praeterita in'Saecula ventura.' (The Generations pass into the coming Generations.) A metal plate below the window is inscribed: ‘To the Glory of God and to the Memory of Simon and Gregory Stone, Brothers, who were born in this Parish, baptized in this Church, and emigrated to Massachusetts in New England in 1635, this Window is erected by American Descendants.'"
