From DAR papers filed by Edith Glatte and Gertrude Hunt: "David Swayze inlisted as a private in the infantry in the state of New Jersey in May, 1776 for five months under Captain AbrahamMcKinney and Lt. Beavus (or Beavers). Served at the battle of Long Island. Had engagements at Ft. Washingotn where most of the company were taken prisoners and he returned home for the reason that there was no officer surviving to command him. Served four months- served one month, December 1776- under Captain William Haylett. Summer of 1777 served one month under captain Ribble. Deponent then lived in sussex Co. New Jersey. Afterwards inlisted for six months under Captain Bonnell and Lieutenant Jacob Rosencrantz at Minnisink. "this is a copy of record in the pernsion certificate granted to widow 6,111."
