Dawid (23), was tied up, raped, beaten, his head bludgeoned with a brick, and set alight while he was still alive, at a dam, in the Ceres area of the Western Cape, on 22nd March 2013. Dawid was an out gay man.

- Christo Oncke (30), who was later convicted and sentenced for Dawid's murder, had invited a group of young people, who were drinking nearby, to come and see “how to kill a moffie”. (Moffie is a commonly used pejorative term for homosexual in South Africa). None of the witnesses to the murder told anyone, but they did go back the next morning to see if Dawid was still alive.
- In January 2016, Judge Siraj Desai found Christo Oncke guilty of the brutal assault and murder. In October 2016, Desai handed down a 17 year sentence to Oncke. Desai found that Oncke's diminished intellectual capacity was a mitigating factor. Stating that even though Oncke had six previous convictions, they were for "petty" crimes. He did however also state that the the murder "had the hallmarks of a hate crime".
