Jacob1 Eliot, brother of Rev. John, had sons Jacob* and Asaph* (of whom Asaph had an only son John,' b. 1683).
Jacob' Eliot, jr., captain and deacon, m. widow Mary Willcock, and d. 17 Aug., 1693, aged 61. His widow d. 9 Dec, 1707, in her 75th year. Savage gives his children with one notable exception: Benjamin. A division of the estate of Jacob was made 5 June, 1701, and was between the following heirs: the widow Mary; the four children of Joseph' Eliot, deceased, oldest son of Jacob; the sons Jacob3 Eliot (mariner), and Benjamin' Eliot (bookseller); and the daughters Mary,' wife of Elizur Holyoke, and Abigail Davis.
Of these three sons, it seems that Jacob' the mariner made his will 14 July, 1698, proved 26 April, 1713, leaving all his estate to his brother " Benjamin Eliot, bookbinder." He d. unmarried, evidently.

72. The Eliots are certainly entitled to mention here, although that old landmark, Eliot Street, is likely to lose its name. The famous " Apostle to the Indians," the Rev. John Eliot,1 had brothers Philip, Jacob, of Boston, and Francis, of Braintree. John left descendants now mostly in Connecticut. Philip had only daughters married to John Smith, Richard Withington, and John Aldis; Francis had only daughters married to Caleb Hobart, John Poulter, John Whitmore, and Stephen Willis. Jacob had sons Jacob and Asaph, and daughters who married Theophilus Frary, Thomas Wyborne, Peter Hobart, and Thomas Downes. Asaph Eliot married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Davenport, and had Elizabeth, wife of Isaac Royall, and John, who married Sarah Downes. Jacob Eliot, Jr., married Mary, widow of William Wilcox of Cambridge, and had, with daughters married to Elizur Holyoke and William Davis, three sons, Joseph, Benjamin, and Jacob. The last two died without issue.
Joseph married Silence, and had Deacon John and Rev. Jacob; of whom John married thrice, and had a son Joseph, of Needham, and two daughters. The Rev. Jacob Eliot, of Lebanon, Connecticut, died in 1766, aged sixty-five, leaving sons from whom there may be issue of the name. These Eliots and their relatives owned a large tract at what was then the South End of the town. The Eliot house was where the Boylston Market2 is, and their land reached from Washington Street west to the Back Bay. Through it Eliot Street was laid out, and the Frarys, Downes, Lowders, and other allied names will be found on deeds of all that property. There was another noted family whose name is more properly spelled Elliott, but later generations have adopted the shorter spelling.

"Mr. Bowditch is, perhaps, over-critical in respect to Eliot street. That street was laid out in 1740 through lands belonging to the descendants of Jacob Eliot, who was one of the brothers of Rev. John Eliot, the "apostle to the Indians." ...
Lib.69, fol. 63-5. — i June 1740. Indenture between Benjamin Eliot) .„,. „„.John Eliot [stationera; Rev. Jacob Eliot of Lebanon, Windham co. Conn.; w. of Jona. Willis of Boston, housewright, they four being the heirs of Jacob Eliot, mariner, decd, on the one part Also John, Edward, Samuel & Jacob (Holyokes all),Mary Arnold, Hannah Burrill, widows, & Sarah w. of John Eliot, stationer: —they seven being the heirs of Mary Holyoke widow decd — who was also an heir of Jacob Eliot & whereas the other sister & heir of Jacob E. was Abigail Davis who sold her right to bro. Benjamin, now they desire to make a division First they lay out 2 streets at nearly right angles, one to run WNW from Orange street—to be called Eliot st; the other to run SSW from Frog Lane to Hollis st, to be called Holyoke st: to be described as follows. Eliot st. to begin 21 inches from the S.E. corner of sd Jacob Eliot's house on Orange St. occupied first by Paul Collins, then by John Clark & now by Benj. Eliot, to run in a straight line WNW 906 feet till it reaches land lately bo't by sa John Eliot of Abigail Davis, widow — The street to be 30 ft wide. And as this 30 ft at the first point will run 7k feet on the land of Joseph Henderson, late of Samuel Band, I the sd H. has sold a strip to the town for a street. Holyoke street begins at the N.E. corner of land of W» Lambert in Frog Lane & runs first through land of John Clough, next through the lands to be divided & then through land of Gov. Belcher till it falls into Hollis St."
