The final chapter of Thomas's story ends with a fitting twist. After his death in 1674, his widow Margaret marries Daniel Abbott, the brother of Thomas's late first wife, Mary Abbott, making Thomas's two wives sisters-in-law.

  • DANIEL ABBOTT of Cambridge, says Savage, probably came in the fleet with Winthrop, 1630. He asked for admission as freeman, Oct. 19, 1630, and was admitted May 18, 1631. This was previous to the union of the Colonies of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay. To obtain this privilege it was necessary to be a church member. In 1635 he owned lots 15 and 16 on what were afterwards called Mount Auburn and Crooked or Holyoke Sts., near the Meeting-house, Cambridge, Mass. The latter lot, with a house thereon, was assigned him by the Proprietors' Committee, Oct. 10, 1635; this he afterwards sold to John Russell. He was fined 5s. for refusing to watch, May 18, 1638, which was remitted. He moved to Providence, R. I., 1639, and was one of 54 of the first settlers there to receive a " homelot in 16 — . The land of the Colony was deeded by Roger Williams and his wife Mary, 1638, and was afterwards divided into " homelots " and "six acre lots." In the clerk's office at Providence is "a revised list" — save corrections and additions — "of lands and meadows as they were originally lotted from the beginning of the Plantation of Providence in Narragansett Bay, N. E., " to the settlers.*
  • The record of the Colony is very meagre up to the time of Abbott's death in 1647 — the same year that George Abbott of Rowley, Mass., died — and very little is known of Daniel. There is no record of his family in Cambridge. He was evidently well-to-do for that day, and must have been able, as both his son Daniel2 and gr.-son Daniel3 were prominent in the affairs of the Colony, the former being several years town clerk, mem. of the G. C, and the latter, a prosperous

  • merchant, was much occupied with town affairs, a mem. of the Council, repeatedly a mem. of the G. C, and several times Deputy or Lt. Governor of the Colony, The family history is most interesting, but brief, as the male line of descent became extinct with the third generation. His wife Mary d. 1643, "or thereabouts." The only record of her is that of her death, which evidently was not made till some years afterward. The only record of the settlement of his estate is as follows: "The Court ordered 27th, 5th mo. 1650 (so called), that Nicholas Power and Gregory Dexter shall take the goods belonging to the children of Daniell [his name is spelled with two l's in all the records] Abbot decd, into their hands, and take notice of the Goats and also care for them, to see to the disposal of them and bring in a list into the town and record them."* On " 28th of 5th mo. 1651," the Court ordered "that Thomas Harris and Nicholas Power shall equally divide the Goats and goods and what else that belongs to the orphans of Daniell Abbott, decd., and possesse Thomas Walling, husband of Mary Abbott, dau. of Daniell, with one half of the Goats and goods, &c., and the other half to order to 'Daniel, son of decd.'"t The following appears in the town records, Apr. 27, 1680, after his death : " Voted by the town that whereas there is noe record in o'r Town book now found extant that Daniell Abbott of Providence, decd, was an equal proprietor with ye rest of ye partners, though known to be, it is ordered that 'his son Daniell, heir by right of succession be now recorded a purchaser in place of his father." Mrs. Abbott must have been a capable woman, as her only son was one of the best and most painstaking town clerks of his time, and his education was probably largely due to her. The surname is spelled with two t's in the old records.

From Find A Grave # 58161767

The son of Daniel Abbott & Mary (Mills) Abbott of England, later of Newe Towne [now Newton], near Cambridge in Middlesex Co MA & Providence, Providence Co RI, Daniel married Margaret White on 25 Dec 1678 in Providence Co RI, d/o William & Elizabeth White of Newe Towne [now Newton], Middlesex Co MA, later of Boston, Suffolk Co MA.

Children [known] with Margaret: 1) Mary Abbott (1679-), m. Thomas Fenner Jr (1684-), s/o Major Thomas & Dinah (Borden) Fenner. 2) Deputy Governor Daniel Abbot (1682-1760), m. Mary Fenner (1692-1759), sis/o Thomas Fenner Jr.

History of Cambridge MA: "The site for what would become Cambridge was chosen in Dec 1630, because it was located safely up river from Boston Harbor, which made it easily defensible from attacks by enemy ships. Also, the water from the local spring was so good that the local Natives believed it had medicinal properties.

The first houses were built in the spring of 1631. The settlement was initially referred to as "the newe towne". Official MA records show the name was capitalized as "Newe Towne" by 1632."

A Timeline of facts: 1 Oct 1665 - Robert Williams sold to Daniel Abbott Jr, a 5 acre 'houselot' "....which did in the original belong to Daniel Abbot Sr, father unto the above said Daniel Abbott and was by the said Daniel Abbott, by sale passed away unto one Robert Morris and from the said Robert Morris, it was passed unto me, the said Robert Williams". (This may have been the five parcels conveyed to Robert Morris on 20 May 1644.)

1668 - Daniel took the oath of allegiance to the King and stayed in Providence during King Phillip's War.

1680 - Mentioned in the Providence town records, petitioning for money for the orphans of Thomas Walling, his brother-in-law: "Dan: Abbott.wt ye orphs of Tho: wallings Right To the 7 pd Rate 8d-July 1680 (pg 207)

Jul 1680 - Listed again for a different amount: "A List of a Rate of a ii (in or/as/money) Levied on this Towne of providence july y 16th:1680: to y end appoynted, as y Towne order enjoyeth Concerneing y sd rate: / the w are/ As followeth impremes,/ Dan : Abbott, with ye orphans of Thomas Wallin 2s 8d." (pg 210-211).

7 Aug 1683 - Filed a Petition indicating not all was well within his marriage to Margaret: "Whereas my wife Margrett through her maddness of folly & turbulency of her currupt will, hath often threatened to ruinate my family, routeing me (as she saith) of horse & foote, destroying me root & branch, putting out one of her owne eyes to putt out both mine, & sett my house on fire: And is since departed from me takeing away my Children without my consent. And as I have been enformed, is now plotting micheife with some of her turbulent Spiritt, that when I am absent from home to rifle my house & take away my goodes, to accomplish her Divelish resolution against me. These are therefore, not only to advise, but alsoe to charge all persons upon theire perrill to forbare any such illegal proceedings, and alsoe do hereby foreworne & forbid all persons whatsoever, to forbare bargaineing with, contracting of Debts, or receiveing any part of my estate of my sd wife Margrett without my approbation."

8 Jan 1684 - Published "These are to desire the Towne, that the within Written prohibition may be put upon the publick record of this Towne, And alsoe published in this Towne meeting."

21 & 26 Nov 1685 - Two grants of land were made to Daniel Abbott "in the right of his deceased father Daniell Abbott".

"Mad" Margaret had been the second wife and widow of Thomas 'Wallin'. Margaret had first been the wife of Robert Colwell of Providence RI. Margaret is mentioned in Daniel's Will, so they did not divorce, but theirs was a very turbulent marriage.

Note: Daniel's sister Mary was the first wife of Thomas D Wallen/Walling. Some speculate he married Margaret White, the second wife of Thomas D Wallen/Walling, only to regain his sister's share of the family inheritance. ce.
