PICTURESQUE CAMEL DRIVER VISITS CITY

One of SA's few surviving Indian camel drivers, Bejah Dervish, who is not sure just how old he is, has come to Adelaide to spend a month's holiday with his granddaughter (Mrs. P. Zanka) at her home in Puller street, Walkerville. Turbaned, white bearded Bejah has an engraved brass compass to prove that he was a member of the illfated Calvert expedition in WA in 1896. He was one of the few survivors. 'I think I land at Fremantle six years before then and I was about 30 old when I come to Australia. That would make me at least 94 now, but I think I'm older than that. "I don't feel that old though," he added with a laugh. Bejah found it hard to reckon up his descendants. He lost track of great grandchildren when they reached 27. Bejah. who was a great camel man in earlier days, is now on the old-age pension and lives with members of his family at Marree. His hobby is breeding date palms.
