About Dhanvanthi Rama Rau
Dhanvanthi Rama Rau was one of the first Indian women to attend college and to teach at an institution of higher learning in India. Her career as an educator became an avenue for her social activism. She became secretary of the All-India Child Marriage Abolition League, a member of the International Alliance for Suffrage and Equal Citizenship, and president of the All-India Women’s Conference. Her primary concern, however, was in the area of family planning and birth control. She worked for the Family Planning Association of India from 1949 to 1963 and was president of the International Planned Parenthood Association from 1963 to 1971. Her memoirs, An Inheritance, were first published in 1977.
She was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian Government in 1959
