This distinguished officer was born at Birr, in 1765, where his father, then a Captain in the 10th Regiment of foot, was quartered. He was paternally descended from an ancient Irish family, being grandson of the venerable Henry Candler, Archdeacon of Ossory, and great-grandson of Thomas Candler, Esq., of Callan Castle, in the County of Kilkenny, and of Jane his wife, daughter of Sir Henry Tuite,* of Sonagh, Baronet, by Diana Mabbot, niece of Edward Hyde,the celebrated Earl of Clarendon; and on the maternal side from the eminent and ancient Yorkshire family of Vavasour,t now extinct in the male line, his mother being the only daughter of William Vavasour, Esq., of Weston Hall in that county, by Anne, daughter of John Chaplin, Esq., of Tathwel), in the county of Lincoln. ....
