Orris and Diantha probably met in Niagara Co., NY, and weremarried there. They pioneered in Branch Co., MI, in 1835 when the area wasstill wilderness. They had no near neighbors for several years, and their onlycompanions were Indians, bears, wolves and deer. Diantha habitually kept thebaby in one corner of the room stowed away in a cradle made by digging a trough outof a log, and, with a poker within easy reaching distance she hoverednear it all day, as she was terrified of both the Indians and wild animals.Their cabin had no doors or windows except blankets, because there was nosawmill at the time. Orris had to carry the wheat three miles to the mill tohave it ground.

November 19, 1896 Courier In the Union City Section: Mrs. Orris Burnett of East Union died at her home last Mondaymorning in her 78th year. Deceased, with her husband, came to this state sixtyyears ago chopping a road from Burlington to the farm located by Mr.Burnnett. They settled there and have lived upon the same farm ever since tilldeath came. Mrs. Burnett belonged to that sturdy type of woman who were thepioneer mothers of Michigan. Eight children were born to her--four sonsand four daughters--all of whom survive, among them are Charles andLeander Burnett, both respected farmers in this township. A loving mother andkind neighbor has gone to the reward of the righteous.
