He was a Dutch officer and poet, Knight of the Military William Order. he was admitted to the Latin school but at the age of 13 again picked provisionally at a trading office. In December 1817 he was ensign in the battalion of hunters in Ghent, where he shortly afterwards went into garrison at Ypres and in 1820 was promoted to second lieutenant. During the Belgian Revolution, when the Military Academy was temporarily lifted, Den Beer Poortugael was appointed to the Company Voluntary Hunters of Leiden University to help set up and with that company he made in August 1831 Day Campaign along. Due to illness Den Beer Poortugael forced to leave the service in 1835 and that same year he was rich receiver, first Brummen, then Pijnacker, in Delft. The Beer Poortugael was in 1833 a member of the Society of Dutch Literature. As a token of appreciation, he gave the Company a letter of 1669, in Stockholm, written by Peter the Great to Johan de Witt. During the stay of Den Beer Poortugael Brummen granted to his participation in the creation of Mettray Netherlands (1851), he helped to found a department of the Society for Public Welfare 't General and his address to the King and to the House of Representatives on the Abolition of Slavery (1856). In 1867, after the annexation of Hanover by Prussia, he stood in Sneek at the head of a corps of sharpshooters, whose exercises in arms he led.
