About Carl D Kruse

Dietrich Kruse was born in Germany in 1829. As a single man he arrived in Lyttelton in January 1856 on the second voyage of the „Isabella Hercus‟. A blacksmith by trade, he set up a business in Papanui. He saw a better future in farming, and by 1862 William Horner had taken over the smithy. Diedrich purchased several blocks of land around the District, but the most notable was the 34 acres (RS 251) that is now the site of St. Bede‟s College. Kruse Place, off Grimseys Road, and the drain/waterway that winds its way through Papanui were named after him. In May 1856 Diedrich married Christina Vogeler at St. Michael‟s Church. She had also been a passenger on the „Isabella Hercus.‟ Diedrich was one of the principal members of the German Community and took a large part in raising money for the German Church. He was elected to the Avon Road Board, was a member of the Papanui District School Committee, and a director of the Papanui Saleyards Company. Christina died in February 1887 aged 55. In 1892 Diedrich married Elizabeth Dixon at St. Mary‟s, Halswell. Diedrich died in September 1905. They are buried at St. Paul‟s, Papanui.
