Retired in 1898 as Deputy Collector. The award of 'Dewan Bahadur' was given in recognition of this masterly work during the famine of 1891, the recommendation being made by Lord Wenlock, Governor of Madras (whose opponents in England had been making a political issue of the situation, and citing the famine as an instance of the Wenlock's mismanagement). Following retirement, he returned to Mangalore, where his services on the District Board of South Canara earned him a Coronation Durbar Medal in 1911. He was also a prominent member of various Catholic bodies.
