About Diwan Bahadur Alexio Pinto
Youngest sone of Jose Pinto. First Mangalorean Catholic to be awarded the title 'Dewan Bhadur'. Joined Government Service in the Madras Presidency. Positions held include: Special Officer in charge of Relief operations at Red Hills (1884); Forest Settlement Officer in Madura, Tinnevely and Coimbatore Districts (1886-90); Special Officer in charge of the Relief operations during famine in the Tiruvellore Taluk (1891); Special Officer for acquistion of land for the Egmore Branch Railway (1894-95). Retired in 1898 as Deputy Collector. The award of 'Dewan Bahadur' was given in recognition of this masterly work during the famine of 1891, the recommendation being made by Lord Wenlock, Governor of Madras (whose opponents in England had been making a political issue of the situation, and citing the famine as an instance of the Wenlock's mismanagement). Following retirement, he returned to Mangalore, where his services on the District Board of South Canara earned him a Coronation Durbar Medal in 1911. He was also a prominent member of various Catholic bodies.
