About Donald MacGregor Drummond
Headstone: Donald McGregor DRUMMOND, born 1815, Dunblane, Scotland, drowned 1850, Lake Wairarapa.
To New Zealand in "Bengal Merchant", reaching Wellington in March 1840, accompanied by J Coutts Crawford, a future very prominent settler. Changed his name to Donald Drummond. J D Peart surmised that Donald's point of view was that they had called themselves DRUMMOND for so long that it was better to remain so, even though in 1775, when his father, and very likely his grandfather, were allowed to take the old clan name of MacGregor, they did so. Was for a time in Nelson. Later in the 1840s leased most of what was later Kilbirnie and Hataitai, supplying Wellington with milk. Drummond Street in Newtown is named after him. It is on the route of the bridle track that joined Wellington and Kilbirnie. Drowned crossing Lake Wairarapa with John Drummond (no relation - Find A Grave ID 143110366).
