About Doris Gruenewald
From David Shavreen's family history: 'So that at least was the broad picture, but what complicated it was a contact I made on a visit to Australia. In Sydney we discovered relatives, descendants of my uncle Louis, the wealthy one, who put me in touch with a Doris Gruenewald who turned out to be a Doris Schaverien originally from South Africa. She told me that she was a daughter of Morris Schaverien who was a son of Victor Schaverien and Sophie Bronkhorst. He had married three times and had fathered two families. She told me he always spoke like a Cockney, was a cheerful rogue who made his living as an auctioneer and that some of his sons had become shipping magnates in Lourenço Marques in Mozambique. Some of their daughters had married Portuguese men and one had returned to Portugal where her son, discovering his Jewish origins had changed his name back to Schaverien and gone to live in Israel.'
