Dorothy missed much of her Grade 12 year because she stayed at home to help her mother, Margaret Barter Monteith, after the birth of her tenth and last child, Nancy Diana. Consequently, she attended Grade 13 in Belleville while living with her sister, Betty (Annie Elizabeth Monteith).

When her sister, Nancy, was born, Dorothy was the oldest girl left at home. Betty was in Belleville, and Eleanor was in nurse's training in Saint John General Hospital. So Mom cleaned up the breakfast dishes each morning and, consequently missed her geometry class. She got her junior matriculation, but Margaret talked her into taking her senior matriculation. So she went to Belleville to do Grade 13 and lived with Betty. The following year, she went to UNB.
