CHARLES HARBERT COUPLE CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY....The 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Harbert of 1116 North Jefferson Street, Litchfield, will be celebrated Sunday, February 20, with a family dinner at 12:30 p.m. in Litchfield Hall. All friends of the couple are invited to an informal open house in the Moose Hall from 2 until 4 p.m. The Harbert's request no gifts.
Mrs. Harbert is the former Miss Dorothy Wood and both Mr. and Mrs. Harbert are natives of Waggoner, Illinois. They were married February 23, 1927, in Carlinville, Illinois. After residing in Chicago for several years, they moved to Litchfield where Mr. Harbert was employed by American Standard Radiator Company, and Mrs. Harbert at Brown Shoe Company plant and later at the Roller Derby Skate factory.
Following the closing of the radiator plant, Mr. Harbert worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, later being transferred to Decatur as a maintenance welder when Caterpillar opened a plant there. While residing in Decatur, Mrs. Harbert was employed by the Mounds School Cafeteria.
Mr. Harbert retired from Caterpillar in February of 1972, and shortly after that the couple returned to Litchfield to their present residence. They became parents of a daughter, Phyllis, wife of Howard Ogden of Litchfield, a son Donald Lee, married to former Mary Stippey of Cobden, and a son, Charles Richard, deceased. They have six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
In the 1940 census for Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, Charles Harbert, 30, and Dorothy, 28, were living with their two children, Phyllis, 11, and Donald, 2. Sadly, heir middle son, Charles Richard Harbert, born in 1930 had passed away in 1934 from cancer. They were renting their house located at 6055 LaSalle Street for $15.00 per month and Charles was working as a foreman for a paint company and oil wholesaler. For the 50 weeks he worked at 40 hours per week in 1939 his income was $1,600. Charles had 3 years of high school as did Dorothy and Phyllis was in the 6th grade. Living next door was Charles' brother, Carl Harbert, 28, and his wife Marie, and he was also working for the same company ad Charles.
