About Dorothy Esther Lloyd
Dorothy "Dolly" "Aunty Dolly" Lloyd never married. If you ever watch Upstairs Downstairs, you will have some idea of the type of work that Dorothy (Aunty) and sister Christina (Grandma) had to do before and during World War II and up until Dorothy retired, Christina gave up her career once married to Patrick and started having the family this writer is connected to!
She had a sweet and gentle disposition and was a devout Pentecostal.
Patrick T Mohide remembers that she bottled the most wonderful cream soda.
Ian remembers his (Great) Auntie Doll with the utmost fondness and she was always a great inspiration to the entire family with her truly wise words and very kind and generous nature. It was always a pleasure to visit her and tea was always taken with a bone china cup and saucer with milk jug and sugar bowl. Her glass crystal jar of 'extra hot' mints was a considerable challenge to us as young children and many times I could not resist the temptation to try one but always had to get rid of it after a couple of minutes, a tissue was always discreetly provided by Aunty Doll for me to spit it into. Many years of service for a family of surgeons who lived in Pembroke Road, in Clifton, had caused her considerable back problems. Auntie Doll suffered quietly but needed to lean on a very hot water bottle when she sat down to ease the pain.
So many young ladies of her generation grew up in a time where there were so few eligible and fit young men, huge numbers having perished or been dreadfully wounded during the Great War. Her life was devoted to serving her employers, helping her sister's family and to the Church where she worshiped. God Bless.
