About Dorothy Nelson

Dorothy Geddes Nelson, 93, died Monday, September 16, 2013, at Barton Creek Assisted Living Center of causes incident to age. Mrs. Nelson had resided in Bountiful, Utah for the last twenty-three years. Dorothy was born May 9, 1920, in Preston, Idaho, a daughter of Mae Reid and Moses Peterson Geddes, the oldest of six children. She spent her childhood in Banida and Preston. She married Guy B. Nelson on November 22, 1937, in Logan, Utah, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They resided in Preston, Ogden, Clinton, and Hurricane, Utah. They were parents of five children: Steven, Gylene, Ronald, Carol, and Luanne, who spent happy childhoods in Clinton, Utah, where the Nelsons resided for thirty years.

Guy, her cherished partner for fifty-three years, worked at Hill Air Force Base where he retired as an electronics specialist after thirty years' service. He served in World War II. After retirement in 1972, they built a new home in Hurricane, Utah, where they resided for eleven years, and also enjoyed a cabin they built on the Arizona strip. Guy died of cancer on June 30, 1990, in Bountiful.

Dorothy previously worked at Hill AFB, where she was editor of the base newspaper, the "Hill Top Times", for twenty-two years. Under her editorship, the newspaper won many awards, including being named the "Best Newspaper in the Air Force" in worldwide competition in 1967 and 1968. Mrs. Nelson was called to Washington, D.C. on these two occasions and presented the newspaper awards at the Pentagon.

A member of the LDS Church, Mrs. Nelson worked in many capacities in church organizations. These included serving as editor of four ward newsletters in different areas where she resided and performing duties as a scribe for two LDS Patriarchs. She served in the Presidency of the MIA and worked on a ward and stake basis in the Relief Society.

Dorothy enjoyed writing and directing road shows, school and church plays, and skits. She had a hobby of collecting and displaying dolls. She was a member of Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and Daughters of the American Revolution and wrote many histories about her pioneer ancestors.

Mrs. Nelson was especially devoted to her family: Her husband, five children, thirteen grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren, and their spouses. She arranged special family reunions and parties and relished these family get-togethers.

Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her husband, Guy; her son, Ronald; a daughter, Gylene N. Skocki; a daughter-in-law, Jane Powell Nelson; and her parents, Moses and Mae Geddes. She is survived by three children: Steven Geddes Nelson, Clinton; Carol (Alan) Hess, Bountiful; and Luanne (Edwin) Hudson, Centerville; and a son-in-law Ronald Skocki, Park City, in addition to her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters and two brothers: Lola Mae Phipps and Dee R. Geddes of Ogden; Moselle Newmann and Virginia Eyestone of Farmington; and Arch A. Geddes of Preston.

The family wishes to thank Mother's many friends, doctors, and nursing personnel at Barton Creek and Orchard Cove who gave her so much love and comfort.
