He wedded Ann, daughter of William Thornburgh, esq. of Hampsfield, in Lancashire, which lady was, through the families of Musgrave, Fitzwilliam, Plantagenet, and de Warren, fifteenth in descent from King WILLIAM the Conqeror. By her he had issue,

Ellen, m. first, Sir James Leybourne, of Cunswick Park, in Wastmoreland (by whom she had Elizabeth, wife, first, of Thomas, Lord Dacre, of Gillesland; secondly, of Thomas Howard, fourth Duke of Norfolk, K. G.); and secondly, William Stanley, third Lord Monteagle (by whom she had Elizabeth, mother to William, Lord Morley and Monteagle, the discoverer of Gunpowder plot).
    • III. Jane, m. to William Lamplough, esq. of Dovenby Hall, in Cumberland.
    • IV. Dorothy, m. William Travers, Esq. of Nateby Hall, in Lancashire.
    • V. Elizabeth, m. Robert Cancefield, esq. of Robert Hall, in Lancashire
    • VI. Catharine, m. Sir Thomas Carus, on of the judges of the court of Queen's Bench, temp. ELIZABETH (and was mother of Mary Carus, who married Henry Kighley, esq. and had issue, Ann, wife of William Cavendish, first Earl of Devonshire, whence the Duke of Devonshire, and also the Earl of Burlington, who possessed the vast estates of the Prestons of Holker, in Lancashire, which were devised to his great uncle, Lord George Cavendish by Sir William Lowther, bart. of Holker, the maternal representative of that family).

  • JOHN PRESTON, esq. of Preston Patrick and Under Levins Halls, and also of the manor and abbey of Furness, who making Furness his principal residence, his family were thenceforth termed "Prestons of the Manor. He was sheriff of Lancashire in 1569. He married* Margaret, daughter to Sir Thomas Curwen, of Workington, in Cumberland, by Agnes, daughter to Sir Walter Strickland, of Syzergh Castle, and by her had issue, ___________________
