About Dorsey G. Sands

Son of William Sands and his first wife Mary Elizabeth Albin who came from Pennsylvania to Nelson County, Kentucky circa 1780. After the death of his mother, which occurred shortly after his birth, Dorsey's father remarried and brought his family west to Indiana Territory.

Harrison, one of the first counties formed in Indiana, held its initial term of court at Corydon on May 10, 1809; one of the members of its first Grand Jury was William Sands who had settled at nearby Lanesville.

Dorsey married Elizabeth Musselman at Harrison County on 27 July 1822 and they made their home at his farmstead in Laconia. Their twelve known children are:

Daniel Mary
Sarah Ann
Christina, called 'Tina'
Isaac C.
Mariah (or Maria)
William
Rebecca
Martin Van Buren
Martha Jane
James K.
John D.

Dorsey "was a good type of the rugged and wholesome pioneer of early Indian days. He was a farmer and gave to that vocation his best years. In politics he was a Whig and was a member of the Baptist Church. He died and was laid to rest on the old homestead...". --Hamilton, Lewis H. & Darroch, William, 1916. "A Standard History of Jasper and Newton Counties, Indiana, Vol. 2". Chicago: Lewis Publishing. Pages 668-69.
