About Dr. Addison Waddell

From Doris Waddell's Family Genealogy:

"Addison Waddell, son of James Waddell and Mary Gordon, was born 19 April 1785, in Gordonsville, Virginia. He was educated at Hampden-Sidney College and graduated in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He moved to Staunton, Virginia, in 1809 and practiced medicine until his death in 1855.

"In April 1813, Addison married Catherine Boys, granddaughter of Commodore Nathan Boys of Revolutionary War fame. They were married by Wm. Calhoun at Old Stone Church. They raised eight children and had in their home two maiden aunts and the widow of Nathan Boys.

"His son, Joseph Waddell, in his book Annals of Augusta County Virginia, wrote, 'Dr.Addison Waddell held no conspicuous public office, and his name seldom appears in our Annals. The writer, however, may say of his father, what all who new him admitted to be true, that he was a learned and wise physician, and a deeply read metaphysician and theologian. Unambitious for himself, he spent his life in endeavoring to help the suffering and needy.'

"He was buried in Thornrose Cemetery, Augusta Co., VA.

"Dr Addison Waddell purchased 400 acres from the original Beverley grant. His son Legh Richmond inherited it and built the first house 'Arlie'. After he moved to Albemade County, his sister, Mrs Wm M Tate, moved there."
