The first Simon ancestor (of this author) whose profession on the U.S. Census wasn’t always listed as “farmer” was Hiram ‘Albert’ Simon*. The second son of Samuel Simon and Margaret Peppel, he was born in November of 1839, near LaOtto, Noble County, Indiana. He married Lovina Rosenberger, the daughter of Albert S. Rosenberger and Christina Gilbert, on November 27, 1843, in Indiana, USA. Together they had three children: Ida, Frank D., and Charles “Charlie” (a.k.a. “Charley”). His 1880 North Manchester, Wabash, Indiana, U.S. Census profession was listed as a physician, while his 1900 Howell, Missouri U.S. Census reported him as a farmer. In a 1983 interview I did with his grandson, Charles ‘Eugie’ Simon, he described his grandpa as “one of those old time doctors.” In politics, like his father he was a lifelong Republican, as would be his son, grandson and great-grandson (my dad). He spent most of his life in the state of Indiana and later adult years (after 1885) in Missouri. He died on February 20, 1913, at age 74, and was buried at the Oak Lawn Cemetery in West Plains, Missouri. His wife Lovina Rosenberger, died February 3, 1934, in South Bend, Indiana and was buried at the Highland Cemetery in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. Her headstone simply reads: “LOVINA SIMON 1843 - 1934.”
According to his grandson, Charles E. Simon his name was "Hiram Albert" that's where his brother "Punk" Simon (Hiram Albert) got his name. (by 2GGS HRSimonJr)
