About Dr Avram Alfred Bata Kohen
"Dr. Bata Koen, son of Josif, a merchant, was an intellectual who was completely integrated in the Šabac environment and was clearly politically oriented toward the left. A descendant of an old Šabac Jewish family, he was born in Šabac on 1 June 1899. He finished high school in his hometown and his medical studies in Lavov. His nostrification was completed in the School of Medicine at the University of Belgrade, and in 1927 he applied for an internship. Further information about his life is contained in his military documents. His medical career led him to different specializations and various places of work. His practice started in the village of Nakučani, and in 1932 he began working in Šabac. There, his obligation was to examine poor patients free of charge. On the eve of World War II, Dr. Koen hid in a village near Šabac, but someone betrayed him. He was brought to Šabac on the night of 20–21 August 1941, and together with Dr. Bora Tirić and other men from the city and vicinity, he was killed. During the day of 21 August, although deceased, his body was hung from an electrical pole in the center of the city. That horrifying image is preserved in a photograph, which is preserved in the Šabac archives. The other surviving members of his family perished in a gas chamber at the Zemun camp.".
