About Dr. Champe Carter McCulloch, Jr.
Birth: 1869 Waco McLennan County Texas, USA Death: Oct. 14, 1928
Dr. McCulloch is the second of ten children of Champe Carter McCulloch, Sr., and his wife, Emma Marie Basset. The father, born and raised in Virginia, was a CSA officer and a grocer by trade who served as the mayor of Waco for several years. The mother, born and raised in Alabama, was a piano instructor at Waco University which later merged and became Baylor University, Waco. All ten of their children were raised in the Waco home they bought in 1871 which still stands as a landmark at 407 Columbus Street. (See Lavonia Jenkins Barnes' wonderful book, Early Homes of Waco and the People Who Lived in Them, Texian Press, 1970.)
Champe Junior graduated from the University of Virginia as a medical doctor who joined the army and advanced to the rank of colonel. He served as Asst. Surgeon of the United States Army at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. He married Mary Azlete "Letta" Gurley (1869-1930), with whom he helped raise at least five children.
