Lee in Virginia . Near the end of the Civil War he was given a secret message to carry to England. The war was over by the time he arrived in England. He served as a doctor in London Hospitals. Anna Was born in North Carolina. Annas brother William Gibbs McNeill was a friend of her husband at West Point. It was on a visit to Oak Forest(Or Baltimore, MD) that George Washington Whistler meet Anna. William Gibbs McNeill was a engineer that designed a lot of the first Railroads and bridges in the Eastern United States.
Dr. Daniel McNeill, brother of John McNeill and father of Anna Matilda McNeill Whistler. The Raleigh Register of January 9, 1829 states: "Died on the 8th ult., at the seat of his brother John MrNeill, J sq., Oak Forest, Bladen County, Doctor Daniel McNeill, in the 72d year of his age, a native of this State, and late from Baltimore, and for many years a resident of Wilmington, N. C, Died December 8, 1828." Since Oak Forest is near the Brown Marsh and other members of the McNeill family are buried here, it is most likley that this is the burial place of Dr. Daniel McNeill.

The daughter of this Martha Kingsley, Anna Matilda (née McNeill) Whistler (September 27, 1804 – January 3, 1881), was the mother of American-born, British-based painter, James McNeill Whistler, who made her the subject of his famous painting Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1, often titled, Whistler's Mother.
