Graves Genealogy 166 # 2843
Dr. Crosby John Graves (2843) was born 9 Nov. 1845 in Russia, Herkimer Co., NY, and died 11 Jan. 1910 in North Wales, Montgomery Co., PA. He married Frances Marion Kuhl, daughter of Henry Kuhl and Caroline Erney, on 20 July 1878. She was born 18 April 1860 in Washington, DC. They lived in North Wales, PA.
At age sixteen, Crosby enlisted in the 81st New York Volunteers, and upon discharge, reenlisted in the New York 21st Regiment. As a young man, he traveled extensively, and was probably the last survivor of the North Park Indian massacre. He studied medicine at Washington University and Bellevue College in NY. He occupied a prominent position in the Post Office Department in WA. Known as a man of letters, Crosby also invented the Graves’ speculum, still in use by obstetricians today.
