From the Pinedale Roundup of Thursday, Oct. 27, 1949:
Funeral Services held for Dr. Emory Jewell, Pioneer Wyo. Physician
Masonic funeral services for Dr. Emory Jewell, pioneer Wyoming physician, were conducted on Monday in Shoshoni where he passed away at his home at the age of 74.
Internationally known for his research work in Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Dr. Jewell was loved and honored by those who knew him personally for his warm humanitarianism and his selfless life of service.
Coming to Wyoming in July 1904, he first settled at Lost Cabin, and in the Fall of 1905 to the newly founded town of Shoshoni. There with his brother, Scott Jewell, he purchased a drug store and operated that business while he practiced as a doctor.
Dr. Jewell is credited with discovering the first known cure for the dreaded Spotted Fever, and continued his research studies until the time of his death.
While carrying on his research, Dr. Jewell maintained a wide and demanding practice. Sixteen years ago, the loss of sight caused him to retire from practice, although he continued with research work and willingly responded when he was called to the sick.
At the 59th annual Commencement exercises at the University of Wyoming in June, Dr. Jewell received an honorary degree of LL.D. Early this month, he was honored by the Shrine when they presented him with a certificate of merit as an outstanding physician and humanitarian at the Fall Ceremony of Kalif Temple in Riverton.
Dr. Jewell is survived by his widow and one daughter, Isabel Jewell, who is well known as an actress.
He was a personal friend of Dr. L.R. Booth of Pinedale. Both, as young men, began their practice in the medical profession at Shoshoni.
