Eugen von Hippel
Eugen Adolf Arthur von Hippel was a German ophthalmologist born in Königsberg.
Early life, education, and training
von Hippel studied medicine in Heidelberg under ophthalmologist Theodor Leber and neurologist Wilhelm Heinrich Erb.
Career
In 1897, von Hippel attained the title of "professor extraordinary" at Heidelberg, and in 1909 became a professor at the eye clinic in Halle. In 1914, he became a professor of ophthalmology in Göttingen.
In 1904, von Hippel described a rare disorder of the retina, and in 1911 discovered the anatomical basis of this disease, which he named "angiomatosis retinae". However it wasn't until 1926 that Swedish pathologist Arvid Lindau recognized an association between angiomatosis of the retina with hemangioblastomas of the cerebellum and other parts of the central nervous system. This condition is known today as von Hippel–Lindau disease (VHL).
von Hippel contributed several writings to textbooks regarding anatomy and diseases of the eye. He was the son of Arthur von Hippel, a pioneer in corneal transplantation, and an uncle to German-American physicist Arthur R. von Hippel.

In 1904, he discovered a rare condition of the retina in which a loss of vision is extremely common. Years later, in 1911, he discovered the anatomical basis of this disease, which he named "angiomatosis retinae". It is now known as Vonhippel-Lindau.

Eugen von Hippel (* 3. August 1867 in Königsberg; † 5. September 1939 in Göttingen) war ein deutscher Arzt und Augenarzt.
Leben und Werk
Von Hippel studierte zunächst an den Universitäten von Gießen und Berlin Medizin. In Heidelberg war er Schüler Wilhelm Erbs und Theodor von Lebers. Während seines Studiums wurde er in Gießen 1884 Mitglied der Studentenverbindung Akademische Gesellschaft Das Kloster.[1] 1889 wurde er in Göttingen promoviert. Vier Jahre später habilitierte er sich an der Universität Heidelberg und folgte 1909 einem Ruf auf einen Lehrstuhl für Augenheilkunde in Halle. Nach dessen Emeritierung übernahm er 1914 den entsprechenden Lehrstuhl seines Vaters Arthur von Hippel (1841–1916) in Göttingen, den er bis ein Jahr vor seinem Tod innehatte.
Von Hippel hat entscheidende Beiträge zur Augenheilkunde geleistet, nach ihm benannt sind die von ihm beschriebene von-Hippelsche Krankheit und das von-Hippel-Lindau-Syndrom. Im Jahr 1912 wurde er zum Mitglied der Leopoldina gewählt.
