Eugene L. Saenger, professor emeritus of radiology at the University of Cincinnati, died September 30, 2007, at the age of 90. With his death, the University of Cincinnati and American radiology lost a leader in isotopic medicine and a world-class expert on the biologic effects of exposure to ionizing radiation.

Eugene Saenger was born and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. His first exposure to radiology came from his uncle, Sidney Lang, one of the pioneer radiologists in the city. During his junior year at Walnut Hills High School, he was accepted as an undergraduate student at Harvard University. He completed his undergraduate degree in biochemical science at Harvard in 1938 and returned to Cincinnati for medical school. He received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1942. He then served his internship and residency in radiology at the Cincinnati General Hospital. He was certified by the American Board of Radiology in 1946.
