About Dr Eugene Weisberger

Dr. Eugene Weisberger, 97, passed away Monday October 9, 2017 at Friends Homes Guilford in Greensboro, NC. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 10th at 11:00 am, at Beth David Synagogue, 804 Winview Drive, Greensboro, NC. Burial will follow at the Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery. Shiva minyan will be Tues., Oct. 10th at 5:45 p.m. at Beth David Synagogue. Eugene Weisberger, born Nov. 8, 1919 in Snina, Czechoslovakia, was one of seven children born to Hannah and Marcus Weisberger. Gene came through Ellis Island to this country at the age of three years and was raised in Pittston, PA. Gene attended the University of Missouri in Kansas City, was a navigation instructor at Bucknell Jr. College of Wilkes-Barre, PA, served in World War II in the US Naval Reserve as an aviation cadet, in the US Army as a meteorologist and then attended and graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1948. “Jinx”, as his close friends and family called him, established himself as a podiatrist in Greensboro in 1949. As part of his practice and service to the community, he drove every month for approximately 30 years to the Blumenthal Jewish Home in Clemmons to treat patients at no charge to them. He had a thriving practice for 45 years, retiring from and selling his firm, Greensboro Podiatry Associates in January 1994. Gene was a devoted member of Beth David Synagogue for 67 years, an active member of Kiwanis for 39 years, and was an early President of the NC Podiatry Society and a member in good standing since 1949. Gene was instrumental in implementing surgical rights in the local hospitals for NC podiatrists. Gene put himself through school and worked very hard to establish and build his practice. Equal opportunities for those less fortunate were very important to him. To afford others opportunities for a healthy and happy life, he and his wife Bobby, generously gave throughout their lives to many charities. They created the Weisberger Philanthropic & Endowment Funds to support Beth David Synagogue, the B’nai Shalom Day School, The Greensboro Jewish Federation, The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. Their philanthropy continues to support the hopes and dreams of many. As a doctor, husband, father, grandfather and friend, Jinx was known as a gentle, kind, loving and supportive man. He took great interest in and derived great pleasure from his two children and three grandchildren and spent a great deal of time with them. He instilled within them a deep sense of integrity, love, devotion and family. Gene was a resident at Friends Home Guilford, most recently in the Skilled Nursing unit. The family is very grateful for the kind attention and care he received the last few years. Gene is survived by his son Robert Weisberger of Greensboro, his daughter Beloved Heartsong (Kim), of Sarasota, FL, her three children, Rachel, Ryan and Evan Spalding, and his youngest sister, Edith Shaw of Kansas City, MO. Gene is also survived by his loving companions/care-givers Jamie Furches and Rose Phillips of Hand and Heart.
