About Dr. George Washington Smith, Sr.
from a member: Dr. Smith, of Hollidaysburg, practiced his profession for upwards of twenty years in Blair County. He received an academic education at Cassville Seminary in Huntingdon County, and graduated in 1857 with the degree of A.B. He attended lectures at the University of Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1862. In 1862 he entered the United States military service as Assistant Surgeon, 54th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. In 1863, he was appointed United States Examining Surgeon of the Pension Department, and served continuously in that capacity to the time of his death. He was President of the Board of Examining Surgeons at Altoona. On 10 May 1859, he married Elizabeth Thomas McCune, by whom he had four children: Ida, Mac, George and Lillie. Mrs. Smith died in 1871. In 1874, he married Eliza B.Calvin, daughter of the Hon. Samuel Calvin of Hollidaysburg. He had three children by his last marriage: Rebecca, Mary and Samuel.
