From Rootschat: I guess I am looking for a needle in a haystack - I am looking for any information of Dr James Pawle - he married a Jemima Bacon and the two of themp plus two children 3 and 1 left on the BELLE ALLIANCE as part of Wilsons party in 1820. I have found a letterof application from him to join the settlement from an address in No. 33 Uxbridge Street Newington Causeway and two follow up letters from 32 Gt St Helens It appears he practiced a surgeon in Lower Albany before being appointed to District Surgeon in George in 1825, he died there in 1873. The source in SA also provided me with the names of Jemima's parents and I have found a possible record for her birth in Norfolk.
James Pawle was an 1820 Settler. A 30 year old surgeon, he arrived with Willson's party on La Belle Alliance, along with his wife Jemima(32) and two sons, James (3) and Henry(1).[1] Whilst the settler returns indicate that Henry Rigg was part of the party he in fact died before the party set sail. James and Jemima had a daughter en-route to the cape so in fact they arrived with children James and Jemima. James was not a qualified surgeon. He was an Apothecary and Male Midwife. He was apprenticed to William Wood, Apothecary, for a period of 7 years in 1805. He then entered a partnership with George Edward Curruthers, this partnership was dissolved in 1813. When he applied to join Wilson's party he was looking for an improvement in his ability to provide for his family.
Party originated from London.
