About Dr. John Grant Crabbe
John graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio (AB 1889, Phi Beta Kappa), and Ohio University (master’s degree 1897). He received honorary degrees from Berea College (1889), Miami University (1900), and Kentucky University (1911).
He served as superintendent of public schools in Ashland, Kentucky (1890–1907); Republican State Superintendent of Public Instruction for Kentucky (1907–10); president of the Eastern State Normal School, Richmond, Kentucky (1910–16); president of the Colorado Normal College, Greeley, Colorado (1916); chairman of Kentucky’s educational Committee of Ten; chairman of the Kentucky Educational Commission; and on the Educational Council of the National Education Association.
John wrote the hymn "Beauty for Ashes."
