This stampless letter has a circular date stamp for HICKSFORD Va, a handwritten 12 1/2 cent rate, and is addressed to Dr. Schoolfield, Portsmouth, Va., and is a three page 'My Dear Father' letter written by Jno. H. Schoolfield. "

SCHOOLFIELD, Joseph James, son of John & Hannah Schoolfield. During the War he was a Surgeon in the 65th Virginia Militia Regiment from Southampton County. He was commissioned 10 Sep 1805 in the US Navy and promoted to Surgeon 28 Jun 1809. He was the Medical officer at the Naval Hospital during War of 1812. He resigned 27 Oct 1817. He practiced medicine for many years in the city. He married Mary Ann Lewis on 27 Oct 1808 who was born on 26 Jan 1791, and died on 30 Nov 1862. Their children were Mary Ann, Lewis, Hannah and Frances
