About Dr./Maj. Henry Whiting
From Karen Cotter: “The Whiting family in its early lines is carefully set out in the Virginia Historical Magazine, Volume XXXII. The first of the Whitings from whom the family can be traced is Dr. Henry Whiting of Gloucester County, Virginia. He was a member of the Council of State and Treasurer of the Colony. As his name drops from the list of Councillors in 1693, it is probable that he died in that year.”

Biography
From Page 356 - 357 of The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume 18 edited by Philip Alexander Bruce, William Glover Stanard. “THE RANDOLPH MANUSCRIPT. Virginia Seventeenth Century Records.”
On account of the destruction of the records of Gloucester county, no complete account of the Whitings during the Colonial period can be obtained. A James Whiting and others of the name lived in Virginia early in the seventeenth century, and may have belonged to this family, but the first who is known to have lived in Gloucester was "Mr. Henry Whiting," who brought a suit in the General Court in 1670, in right of his wife Apphia, widow of Richard Bushrod, of York county. In Feburary, 1671-2, he is mentioned in the records of York county as "Dr. Henry Whiting" of Gloucester. In 1680 he was a justice of the county and major of horse in the militia; appointed member of Council 1691, and Treasurer of Virginia July 5, 1692-3.
At " Highgate," in Gloucester, is the tomb of Catherine, wife of Major John Washington and daughter of Col. Henry Whiting, and Elizabeth his wife. She was born May 22d, 1694. It is not known whether this was the same as Henry Whiting of the Council. The tomb bears Arms: On a Chevron, between three wolves 'heads erased, three trefoils. Crest: A wolf's head (?) erased. These arms must be intended for Whiting; but there is no coat like this ascribed to Whiting in the ordinary books of heraldry.
