About Dr. Nahum Willard

ID: I27949 Name: Nahum Willard 1 Sex: M Birth: 28 MAY 1722 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA Death: 26 APR 1792 in Uxbridge, Worcester, MA Residence: Uxbridge, Worcester, MA Note: He was a physician at Worcester; surgeon in Col. Nathan Taylor's regiment July 6 to December 31, 1779. Is said to have "adhered to the British side in the Revolution." He was one of quite a large party of Worcester citizens who drew up and signed a protest against the proceedings in Boston in 1774 -- the opposition to the Stamp Act, the Spilling of the Tea, etc., at the opening of the Revolution. The majority of Worcester citizens stoutly opposed these loyalist men and voted them out of citizenship. Dr. Willard, however, apologized to the town for his course and became a hearty supporter of the new government in 1778.

ID: I22499571 Name: Nathum WILLARD Given Name: Nathum Surname: Willard Sex: M Birth: 28 MAY 1722 in Lancaster, Mass Death: 26 APR 1792 in Uxbridge, Mass Change Date: 23 JUN 1998 Note: REFN2429 Nathum Willard Nathum Willard became a Physician and established himself in that practice in Worcester, where he was held in much respect. In 1756, he was a surgeon in a Company in Capt. Chandlers Regiment, raised to prevent the advance of the French after the surr ender of Fort William Henry. That same year, President John Adams, then a student of law with Mr. Putnam in Worcester was a member of Dr Willards family, and on a very intimate and pleasant footing." Dr Willard had," said Mr. Adams, "a very large practic e, a good reputation for skill and a pretty library. Indeed Mr. Adams was so enamored with the medical works, which he found in the doctor's library that he entertained thoughts of becoming a surgeon and physician. In 1771, Mr. Adams in journeying throu gh Worcester again visited Dr and Mrs. Willard. " I see", he says, " little alteration in him and his wife in sixteen years. This good couple pursued the even tenor of their ways until the time of the Revolution, when probably he was found in sympathy with the Loyalist Party, which was natural enough, from his connections and social relations, the men of that party having been of potential influence in the county of Worcester. Of course, he was visited with the wrath of the Worcester Sons of Liberty, and compelled to acknowledge, the perserveness of his wicked heart, which led him to abuse the Continental and Provincial C ongresses, the selectmen of Worcester and the Committees of Correspondence in general. The domicilatary visits were made to many very respectable and worthy men, were generally attained with the same results. If they did not recant offensive expressions and humble themselves, personal violence would be the result. After the American Revolution, Dr Willard moved to Uxbridge, where he died April 26 1792, having completed nearly 3 score and 10 years. His eldest son, Dr Samuel Willard was a distinguished Ph ysician in Uxbridge From The Willard Family by J. Willard 1885
