Born in Wood County's Perry Township, Nathan was the second son of John S. and Johanna (Bonnell) Hatfield. A younger brother, Charles B. Hatfield, also became a physician.
Raised on his father's farm, he began reading medicine under Dr. C. R. Rosendale of West Millgrove at the age of 21. In 1876, he began his medical studies at Wooster University in Cleveland. He graduated in early 1879, and began his practice at West Millgrove.
In October of 1879, he married Ora, daughter of Abraham and Lydia Foster, who bore him one child, Charles S., before her early death.
Dr. Hatfield next married Mrs. Albert Loe, (nee Louzila Shanabarger) in 1887, and later moved to Bowling Green.
