About Dr. Otto Julius Goldschmid
studied chemistry in Stuttgart, Germany. He arrived in the U.S. in the fall of 1938. He finished his studies at the University of California at Berkeley, receiving a doctorate in chemistry in 1939. He worked as a research chemist for Rayonier in Pacinc Northwest and from 1941 he worked as a chemist in Shelton. He contributed numerous articles on the chemistry of wood constituents to various scientific journals. After his retirement from Rayonier in 1975, he continued his involvement in science by translating scientific articles from German. An avid gardener, hiker and baker of bread, he was an active member of the Walkie-Talkies, a local group that schedules weekly hikes walk. He was a long-time supporter of the Mason County Community Concert Association and local library.
