Dr. Miller was educated at Grinnell College in Iowa and at Oberlin College in Ohio. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a Lieutenant, j.g. in the United States Marines.
After the end of the war, Dr. Miller resumed studies at Northwestern University in Evanston. In 1950, while at Northwestern, he married Carol Herter, and in 1955 he was awarded a Ph.D. in American History. Prior to completion of his dissertation, Dr. Miller assumed a position on the faculty of the University of Texas at El Paso where he taught from 1951 to 1956.
Dr. Miller joined the faculty of the history department of UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall of 1956 and remained with the department until his retirement in 1991. During his career at Chapel Hill, Dr. Miller authored numerous articles and four books: "American Protestantism and Social Issues 1919-1939" (1958); "How Shall They Hear Without a Preacher" (1971); "Harry Emerson Fosdick, Preacher, Pastor Prophet" (1985); and "Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam — Paladin of Liberal Protestantism" (1990). In 1968-69 Dr. Miller was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to teach at the University of Hong Kong.
Dr. Miller enjoyed sports, bridge, gardening and fishing, and particular after his retirement, was able to travel with his wife to Europe, South America and throughout the United States.
